Points of Intervention
The project identified points of intervention within the wool supply chain. From the extraction of the wool to the production of the garment everything needs to be registered on a database, producing only the necessary and avoiding exploitation of resources. The wool garments are designed to be worn a certain number of times, making sure that the resources were not used in vain. In every garment it can be found a knitted QR code.
Giving responsibility to the consumer
Each garment is assigned a number of wears depending on its environmental impact.
Through the QR code, the user registers on the app everytime a garment is used until they reach the wears number.
"Measures are therefore needed that not only address the product’s design and strategies for prolonged- and end-of-life textiles, but also the number of products produced."
Speculative, Critical Design
7 weeks, Learning from the Past
Using knitting as a starting point, the project envisions an“alternative present”
where garments are designed for maximum longevity with limited natural resources.
Connecting the way people used clothes in the Iron Age with today’s digital world, an alternative world is framed, where user and industry are controlled and equally responsible for impacts caused by the fashion industry.
"Societies went back to depend only on natural resources to produce clothes. Everything is controlled to keep the production as sustainable and ethical as possible. Wool is one of the main raw materials and sheeps are a precious animal that humans take care of and respect, they know how much they depend on them."
Through the app it is possible to access all the information about the garment. It is also a place to share memories and stories, increasing the emotional connection with the clothes.
When it comes to discarding the garment, if the number of wears is not completed, it is possible to search for a second hand store. Or giving it back to the soil once the number of wears is achieved.
Exploring structures
When developing the textile, different wool yarns and knitted structures were tested by users.
As a way of better understanding the process of designing clothes using only wool and with a strong focus on the longevity of the garment, a small collection of sweaters was created, as examples of what the clothes in this “alternative present” could look and feel like.
From mild to wild
With aesthetics from mild to wild, three designs for a sweater were proposed. Thought to last, the ribbed structures allow adjustability. The small collection is gender neutral and made exclusively from wool.
